OUR PURPOSE STATEMENT:  To change the way the world defines and views disability by making profound, positive differences in people’s lives every day.

 

In 1953, a small group of committed individuals noticed a gap in services to address the needs of people living with a disability in the River Region.  Their primary motivation was for a more centrally located facility so that children would not have to be transported to other areas for service.

Starting out with five programs, Easterseals Central Alabama was born on three acres donated by the Montgomery Baptist Association.  Easterseals opened doors and welcomed their first consumers in the fall of 1961, and the first individual served was a lady from Opelika who had lost one of her legs just below the hip.  She could not wear her artificial limb walking in, but she certainly did walking out!

Fast forward, and Easterseals Central Alabama has moved into a new building and updated its logo but is still meeting the needs of people living with a disability in the River Region.  Through a variety of programs, and serving as a resource “hub”, Easterseals Central Alabama serves thousands of children, adults, and seniors across the state.
