Salem Mezick’s Journey with Easterseals
| Salem Mezick is a bright and lovable 5-year-old who has touched many hearts at Easterseals Central Alabama. With his sweet smile, friendly spirit and little cowboy boots, Salem brings joy everywhere he goes. This year, he proudly serves as the “Crawfish Ambassador” for the 22nd Annual Autism Crawfish Boil.
When Salem was just 2 years old, his mother, Savannah Hagans, knew he needed help. He was smart and curious but he could not speak. He faced sensory challenges, struggled with food, and often became overwhelmed. For a parent, those early years were filled with worry, questions, and hope. When Salem came to Easterseals at age 3, everything began to change. Through speech therapy, he found his voice using a hand-held device. Through occupational therapy, he began building important life skills. Food School helped him face the sensory struggles that once made eating so hard. For a long time, Salem would only eat baby food. Now, after hard work and support, he is trying and enjoying many new foods, including whole foods. Today, Salem is thriving. He loves dinosaurs, puzzles, maps, letters, numbers, magnets, and building things. He is eager to learn, and his family now looks forward to the day he starts kindergarten in 2027. Salem’s progress is more than a success story. It is a reminder of what hope, therapy and support can do for a child and family.
