College Prep is designed to provide real-world college experience to high school seniors who are living with a disability, are interested in furthering their education,  and are involved in Vocational Rehabilitation Services.

A partnership between Auburn University Montgomery (AUM), Easterseals Central Alabama, and the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services, the program covers topics such as study skills, writing college papers, assistive technology, the accommodation process, time management and more.  For three days, students attend this class on the campus of AUM and have an opportunity to ask questions and get acclimated to college life and expectations.

Twenty students participated this year and have plans to go to area two and four-year colleges!  Having gone through College Prep, they will be ready!

Barriers to service.  What are they for some of the families that we serve?  What can we do?  How can we help?

Each year, Easterseals Central Alabama tries to address any potential barriers to receiving services.  Even as recently as this past April, the entire staff got together to share the needs, expressed to them by the people they serve (no person identified), with the staff and brainstorm solutions and resources.

We want to do everything we can to ensure our community has access to the services and programs we offer.  We discuss barriers such as architectural, environmental, attitudinal, financial, employment, communication, technology, transportation, community integration and other barriers that may prohibit an individual or family from achieving greater independence.

As you may be aware, in June, Easterseals Central Alabama moved into a new building, and with the help of the Alabama Department of Rehabilitation Services (ADRS) we completed a barrier survey of our new facility.  The purpose of this accessibility survey was to identify any potential architectural barriers, making our new building as usable as possible for people with disabilities.  The surveyors identified three minor issues that needed to be addressed; all located within our Rotary Work Center building next door to our main facility.  All three recommendations were swiftly corrected.

We continue to seek input from those we serve and from the community to identify possible barriers.

If you have an accessibility issue that prohibits you from accessing Easterseals Central Alabama or the programs and services we offer, we encourage you to please contact Harriette Dorosin, Easterseals Accessibility Committee Chairperson at hdorosin@eastersealsca.org or call 334.387.3276.
